Pilota is an ancient
game. Versions of the game were played by the Greeks, Romans, and Mayan
tribes. And although pilota, or handball, did not originate in Euskal
Herria, the Basques have adopted the game and made it their own. The
Basque version not only tests speed & skill, but endurance as well.
Basques who emigrated around the world, took with them the love of the
sport as part of their culture.
There are numerous versions
of the game, which include the use of a wooden paddle (pala & paleta), different types
of racquets (xare & frontenis), leather gloves (rebot & pasaka), and the
glove & basket combination known as xistera or cesta from which
jai-alai, remonte, rebote & joko garbi are played.
